The Posh Weekly - 02-April-2014

<div style='background-color: #005abb;'><a href='http://news.rsspump.com/' title='news'>headlines</a></div>

Vital Posh looks at the latest news coming out of Peterborough United over the past week and also what their rival teams in League One are up to.

WEMBLEY WINNERS

Johnstones Paint Trophy Winners 2013-2014 - Peterborough United

Peterborough United achieved their first aim of the season by winning the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy for the first ever time.

The 3-1 victory at Wembley Stadium over automatic promotion chasing League Two side Chesterfield sealed the first non-Play-Off silverware under the ownership of Darragh MacAnthony.

First half goals from loanee Josh McQuoid and defender Shaun Brisley gave Posh a lead although the Spireites had more possession without creating too much.

Chesterfield did pull a goal back before teenager Joe Newell saw red for kicking an opponent after being stamped on.

With everyone fearing the worst, a sudden burst forward by Mark Little saw the right back upended in the penalty box with the resulting penalty, from Britt Assombalonga, deposited in to the back of the net to ease the pressure off Posh.

Posh held firm for the remainder of the game to win the Trophy for the first time in their history.

PLAY-OFF DATES ANNOUNCED

The Football League have announced the dates of the end of season play-offs.

Should Posh finish in sixth place, they will play their home leg first on Saturday, 10th May with the match kicking off at 12:15pm. The return leg will take place on the Tuesday afterwards.

The League One Play-Off Final will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, 25th May.

LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP

We are now in the final full month of the 2013-2014 season. Posh have eight matching remaining and you can read a review of those games HERE.

The top three sides have all qualified for at least the play-offs while Rotherham United and Preston North End need just a point each to also qualify for the play-offs. That leaves just sixth place to play for and it could go down to the wire.

Posh currently hold sixth place and have a point lead over Swindon Town but they do have two games in hand. Walsall are also just two points behind Posh with MK Dons and Port Vale three and four points behind Posh respectively. Posh have two games in hand over all four of those sides. At one point, Sheffield United were mounting a real challenge but have come unstuck recently and now find themselves six points behind Posh having played a game more. It is all in Posh`s hands though and if they can mount an unbeaten run until the end of the season, which is possible, we could be looking at another round of play-offs.

It looks more and more likely that Wolves will win League One. They are six points ahead of Brentford although the Bees do have one game in hand. They are both in good form so unless that form deserts them, then they should finish in the top two.

Down at the bottom is becoming more and more interesting. There are just two points separating the bottom six sides! Shrewsbury Town slipped to the bottom last night [Tuesday, 1st April after Stevenage held League leaders Wolves to a goalless draw to move above them by a point. Shrewsbury and Stevenage meet each other this weekend!

One point above Stevenage is a cluster of teams. Crewe Alexandra, Carlisle United, Tranmere Rovers and Notts County are all fighting for their League One lives as the relegation battle will go down to the final weekend.

Sheffield United`s Kieron Freeman was sent off against Brentford last night but 30 seconds after receiving his marching orders, the red card was rescinded!! After consulting with the assistant referee, referee Eddie Ilderton advised that he made the wrong decision, rescinding the red card and starting the game with a drop ball!!

Tranmere Rovers are hoping to raise some much needed revenue by issue 2 million shares! Chairman Peter Johnson is seeking new investors and wants to give supporters a greater say in how the club is run.

In the meantime, Rovers boss Ronnie Moore has been charged with "multiple breaches" of betting rules! Moore has until 8th April to respond to the charge.

After being sacked by Portsmouth last Thursday, Richie Barker has made a quick come back and is now the assistant boss of MK Dons. Let`s hope he has the same success with MK Dons as he did with Pompey!
