Vital Posh Player of the Season 2011/2012 Winner

With what could be called a successful season for Peterborough United, there were many highlights as well as lowlights but finishing 18th on their return to the npower Championship and reaching Darren Fergusons points target of 50 (just), makes this a season to remember.

Skipper Grant McCann had an excellent start to the season and scored some vital goals but his form curtailed after returning from injury. The same could be said for right back Mark Little who was atrguably playing some of his best football in the early stages of the season, but like McCann, an injury in the middle of the season was his downfall as newcomer Craig Alcock was quickly becoming a fans favourite as he displayed some excellent defending at both left-back and right-back and later in the season at centre-back. Alcock`s form meant Little struggled to regain his place and when he did, his form deserted him.

For a large portion of the season, the centre-back pairing featured the calmness of Ryan Bennett and the battling Gaby Zakuani who, despite not being the best player with the ball at his feet, certainly let the opposition know it wouldn`t be easy to get past him! It was Zakuani`s keenness to play through injury to ensure the team achieved their goal that also made him a firm favourite at London Road. A broken foot and knackered shoulder couldn`t hold Gaby back from playing as he ended the season with a host of club and fan awards.

Has Gaby won the Vital Posh Player of the Season award though?

He faced tough competition from Craig Alcock, as well as Paul Taylor who capped his first full season off at Posh by being the top scorer with 12 goals. The silky skills of George Boyd also lit up London Road, albeit not as often as we`ve come to expect, but he has put in a decent stint and could often be seen chasing players from one side of the pitch to the other.

Tommy Rowe was the forgotten man for many matches as he went about his business quietly while Lee Tomlin had a frustrating year and one which he`d like to improve upon next season. Lee Frecklington was also the surprise package of the season as he has had such an injury hit time during his time at Posh and was on the transfer list this time last season. However, a return to fitness and an inspired pre-season brought him back into Ferguson`s plans as he ended up playing the majority of the games. Unfotunately, his form went downhill from the Christmas period - much like Posh`s!

So, who has won the Vital Posh Player of the Season?
