Ref Watch: Peterborough United v Charlton Athletic
The man in charge of the Sky Bet League One match between Peterborough United and Charlton Athletic at the ABAX Stadium is BRETT HUXTABLE.
Posh have the pleasure of a referee from Devon for the second successive match. After the impressive showing of Lee Swabey in the snow-laden match against Walsall, Brett Huxtable will be the next man in charge of a match at the ABAX Stadium.
Huxtable is in his second season as a level one referee but he is aiming for the Premier League as he said: "I am level one, but to referee in the Championship you have to be level one select group two. The Premier League is select group one - so I am two away from the Premier League.
"That is the plan [to get to the Premier League] if everything goes well. When you start refereeing the ambition is to go as high as you can.
"I don't want to stay at this level, I don't want to stop - I want to go as far as I can.'
Huxtable has officiated two Posh matches since his promotion to the Football League with both matches ending in a one-nil defeat! Hopefully they won`t make it three defeats on the bounce under Huxtable!
The first defeat came at the ABAX in October 2016 when the Dons scored the only goal of the game after 10 minutes through Tom Elliott. Three yellow cards were shown in the match with two going to Posh players.
The second defeat was away at Bradford City a year ago and it was another first-half goal that won it for the home side. Alex Jones scored the winner for the Bantams after 24 minutes with ex-Posh defender Nat Knight-Percival picking up Bradford`s only yellow card of the game. Posh received five yellow cards in the match!
Both fixtures have seen Huxtable come under the spotlight in our "Rate the Ref" vote and he has an overall rating of 59.68%. The voting is split between four categories: Decision Making, Consistency, Fitness and Positioning, and Control and Authority.
The visitors to the ABAX on Saturday are the team one place and one point ahead of Posh in the League. Charlton Athletic have also played one game less than Posh so a home win is vital. If you go on statistics then it doesn`t look good with the two defeats Posh suffered under Huxtable and the only game the Bantams have had the official, they ran out three-nil winners against Gillingham. Five yellow cards were dished out in that match with three going to Gills players.
So far this season, Huxtable has officiated 32 matches issuing 121 yellow cards and seven red cards.
His highest card count for a match this season is 9 cards in a match which has happened twice.
The first time was early in the season in the League Two match between Cheltenham Town and Mansfield Town, who were managed by new Posh manager Steve Evans. The Stags picked up five yellow cards with the home side picking up four cards in their three-nil victory.
The second time came on New Years Day when Yeovil Town entertained Crawley Town in a League Two clash. Both sides scored a goal each but Crawley won the match with a 90th minute winner while collecting five yellow cards. Yeovil were on the wrong side of the ref as they received two yellow cards but two red cards! Connor Smith was dismissed for a second yellow card in the 37th minute with Omar Sowunmi received his marching orders on the stroke of half-time with a straight red card.
The last match Huxtable officiated came in the middle of February in the League Two match between Barnet and Accrington Stanley. Five yellow cards were shown in the match that finished one-all. The Bees received four of those cards including one to former Posh defender Ricardo Almeida Santos.
The last League One match refereed by Huxtable was on Shrove Tuesday between Plymouth Argyle and AFC Wimbledon. The Pilgrims were three-one up by half-time with both teams adding one more goal in the second-half. Five yellow cards were also shown in the match with three going to the home side.
His statistics for the last few seasons in the Football League are:
2017/18 - 32 matches - 17 home wins - 8 away wins - 7 draws
2016/17 - 38 matches - 19 home wins - 11 away wins - 8 draws
Card Tally For Last Few Seasons:
2017/18 - Games 32 - Yellow 121 - Red 7
2016/17 - Games 38 - Yellow 140 - Red 5
His matches involving Posh and the Addicks to date are:
Posh - 2 matches - 0 wins - 0 draws - 2 defeats
Addicks - 1 match - 1 win - 0 draws - 0 defeats
The assistant referees for this match will be Steven Plane and Joe Clark. The fourth official is Ian Dudley.
