Three Things We Learned About Posh v The Iron

Three things we learned from Peterborough United v Scunthorpe United.

1. Joe Ward - Impressive in unaccustomed role

For those of us who witnessed the FA Cup clashes between Posh and Woking, they would have seen Ward at first hand and, especially in the first match, would`ve been impressed by what they saw. It was little surprise that Posh then went on to sign the winger in January but for the last two matches he has played in an unaccustomed wing-back position.

Ward was good playing in that position for the first time against Gillingham at the weekend and was again impressive in that role in the home game on Tuesday night against promotion chasing Scunthorpe United.

It usually takes time for any player to step up a League but to step up and to go a long way to make the left wing-back position his own is saying something. The question is, can he keep up those performance levels in the remaining 15 matches of the season? If not, we still have Andrew Hughes banging on the Grant McCann`s door for a starting position and don`t forget about the injured Gwion Edwards!

2. McCann becoming more like marmite with each match!

We`ve never been critical of McCann but he is definitely starting to rub people up the wrong way with a contingent even calling for his head, while we are starting to wonder about some of his decision making.

He is still in the infancy of his managerial career but is his inexperience costing Posh the chance of promotion? With nearly three-quarters of the season gone, he still doesn`t appear to know his best formation and constantly makes unusual substitutions!

We are coming to a very crucial stage of the season and we are certain McCann will be here for the duration and probably longer but Posh need to start going on a winning run and if they don`t, more fans will be turning against him than backing him up!

3. Marriott - Is he still a team player?

It`s been a few seasons since Posh last had a 20 plus goal striker on their books but has he gone off the boil?

Since his brace of goals in the FA Cup at Villa Park against Championship side Aston Villa, Marriott has struck just one goal in seven matches.

Marriott did pick up an injury in the warm-up to the Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final defeat at League Two side Lincoln City so has he really recovered or is he just in a poor run of form?

In recent games, especially in the last two matches, there has been criticism aimed at him for being selfish when on the ball and trying to do it all himself even when there are players in better goalscoring positions. This selfishness may well have been the difference between Posh picking up two victories in their last two matches instead of drawing both matches.

Is Marriott now playing for himself instead of for the team?
