Vital Posh MOTM v Scunthorpe United Poll
Rate the Peterborough United players in the Vital Posh Man of the Match Poll for the Sky Bet League One match against Scunthorpe United which is now up and running.
Posh stuck to their three-at-the-back formation for this crucial match against fellow promotion hopefuls Scunthorpe United and for the start, it worked wonders as Posh played very well with some slick passing and moving.
This, somewhat unrecognisable Posh, sliced their way through the Iron to open the scoring after just 90 seconds via Marcus Maddison who missed the draw at the weekend.
Posh created numerous openings after that but, just as we saw on Saturday, failed to convert any of them.
The Iron are in the promotion hunt for a reason and they started to get back into the game and equalised following for poor defending but more pressure by Posh at the end of the half saw them deservedly take the lead again in added time after Junior Morias saw his miskicked effort end up in the net.
With no changes at half-time, we were all expecting much of the same but what we saw was something completely different. Posh appeared to have "parked the bus"!!!
This just invited the opposition to dominate proceedings and it was no surprise that they equalised once again.
Did Posh boss Grant McCann really send his side out to defend for 45 minutes and hope to catch the Iron on the break? If he did then that was very poor management especially playing with a back three!
McCann`s substitutions were also very questionable. Joe Ward, who was arguably one of the best Posh players on the pitch, was replaced by Danny Lloyd but Lloyd added very little with Andrew Hughes replacing Jack Baldwin as Posh reverted to a back four…a move that should`ve happened at half-time but as usual, McCann was too late making the changes needed.
Apparently Ward was tired which is why McCann withdrew him but if that was the case, why not take off Steven Taylor who look jaded as well instead of Baldwin? The Iron`s second goal came when their full-back skipped past Taylor with ease to set up the second equaliser!
Michael Doughty was the third player to go off and, like Ward, was one of the stand-out Posh players especially in the first half although he did, like Anthony Grant struggle in the second half. Leo Da Silva Lopes was the man to replace Doughty and he did play well in the short time he was on the pitch.
A special mention also goes to Liam Shephard who was found virtually all over the pitch and if all the players put in as much effort as him and Ward, then we would be winning games like this one and Gillingham last Saturday!
The draw saw Posh drop down League One even further to 10th place, five points from the play-offs while the Iron also dropped down to 5th place but they are seven points away from Charlton Athletic who sit in seventh.
