The man in charge of the Sky Bet League One match between Gillingham and Peterborough United on Saturday is CRAIG HICKS.

Referee Craig Hicks received his promotion from a Level 2A to a Level 1 Referee towards the end of May 2017, meaning that for the 2017/18 season he will be officiating in the English Football League, Leagues One and Two for the first time.

Hicks began refereeing within Surrey FA in 2001, and has since gone on to officiate at a wide level of football, starting on the grassroots leagues across Surrey, before progressing through numerous leagues up to the National League.

After gaining promotion, Hicks, who took charge of the 2016 Surrey County Cup Final between Merstham and Godalming Town, said: "I am very pleased to be promoted to the Football League, and I can`t wait for the new season to begin."

Despite being in his first season as a Football League referee, Hicks has already officiated both the Gills and Posh.

It was a goal bonanza in the Gills match as 12 goals were scored in a Checkatrade Trophy match against Reading Under 21`s. The Gills raced into a three-nil lead inside the first thirty minutes before the Royals hit back seven minutes before half-time. Luke O`Neill restored the Gills three-goal lead as the half ended 4-1.

The Royals staged a comeback in the second-half leveling the scores by the 68th minute but four more goals were scored in the final 10 minutes with the Gills scoring three of them! The Gills also picked up two of the three yellow cards shown during the match.

Three yellow cards were also shown in the Posh match refereed by Hicks with Posh picking up two of them. That match, against Portsmouth in League One, came two weeks after the Gills 12-goal thriller. After a goalless first half, Jack Marriott opened the scoring for Posh just before the hour mark before an own goal from Matthew Clarke extended their lead. Pompey pulled a goal back with twelve minutes remaining via Conor Chaplin but neither side could score again as Posh held on for all three points.

So far this season Hicks has officiated 28 matches issuing 101 yellow cards and 4 red cards.

His last match came at the end of January in the League One clash between Southend United and Scunthorpe United. Both sides traded goals in each half before Michael Turner scored the winner for the Shrimpers in added time as the Irons were reduced to 10-men after Cameron Burgess received his marching orders for a second yellow card.

The assistant referees for the Gillingham v Posh clash are Steven Plane and Samuel Ogles. The fourth official is Carl Fitch-Jackson.
