Vital View - Coventry City 1-0 Posh - A Defensive Midfielder Dilemma!

Coventry City 1 -Vs- 0 Peterborough United
Venue: Ricoh Arena
Date: Saturday, 8th April, 2017
Attendance: 10,551 (849 Posh fans)

Posh were looking to make it three wins on the bounce and five games unbeaten but the players looked like they were on a wind down towards the end of the season.

With Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony [pictured below] looking on from the stands and with a planned meeting with Posh boss Grant McCann this coming week to discuss who should stay or who should be put on the transfer list, not many players looked like they want to stay!!

Posh had the perfect chance to take the lead in this match when Martin Sameulsen was upended in the box. Surprisingly, Craig Mackail-Smith, not the best penalty taker in his time at Posh, stepped up to blast the kick down the middle of the goal. Unfortunately, the ball hit the keepers legs!

Many people are questioning why Michael Bostwick didn`t take it after Marcus Maddison had missed the previous penalty but he would`ve blasted the ball down the middle as well!! Despite missing his last penalty, surely Maddison has proved the most successful penalty taker in recent times?!?

That penalty miss proved crucial as the midfield diamond failed massively once again allowing a side at the bottom of League One so much room in midfield for which they eventually took advantage early in the second half to score the only goal of the game.

What we can`t understand is in games where we need to take the game to a struggling side do we insist in playing with a defensive midfielder?

When Posh were forced to switch Michael Bostwick from the base of the diamond to central defence and bring Chris Forrester into that position earlier in the season, Posh thrived. Forrester may not have been at his best since the game against Chelsea in January but he is still the most influential player we have for that position.

Anthony Grant was brought in to the club in January and for the first few games was very good in that defensive midfield position at the base of the diamond. He is certainly an improvement on Bostwick in that position but when we need to be more creative and don`t need to be as defensively minded then we surely need Forrester in that position?

When playing against top sides where we need to be strong in midfield then surely that is the time to use a defensive midfielder? Matches against the sides struggling near the bottom of the League are games where we need to be on the front foot and take the game to the opposition. We don`t do that when we employ a defensive midfielder. Admittedly Grant is better going forward than Bostwick but he`s not better than Forrester hence why the latter should play when we need to attack the opposition.

Martin Samuelsen has been poor during his stay at the ABAX Stadium this season but is that simply down to the diamond midfield? He showed his true talent last weekend when Posh reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation so why pick him for the Coventry match only to revert back to a diamond?

That was a massive mistake by Grant McCann and it is hard to fathom why he chose to play a diamond again with Samuelsen in it!

We all know MacAnthony won`t get rid of McCann in the foreseeable future but McCann surely needs to learn quicker than he is. Hopefully when an "experienced" number two arrives during the summer will McCann also improve further and make better decisions.
