Peterborough United look to keep their good start to the season going with a trip to third from bottom Colchester United.
Colchester United -Vs- Peterborough United
Venue: Weston Homes Community Stadium
Date: Saturday, 30th August, 2014
Posh got back to winning ways last weekend with a hard fought 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Bradford City. That win was even more impressive given the long injury list Posh were suffering with which meant three under 18`s had to be named on the bench.
Colchester have had a disappointing start to the season having drawn just one match this season and sit third from bottom.
HEAD TO HEAD
There has been a healthy competition between Posh and the U`s with 75 competitive matches played between the two sides.
Nine of those matches have come in Cup competitions with 66 being played in the League. Posh just have the edge with 28 wins compared to 25 wins for Colchester while there have been just 13 draws.
The two sides first met in competitive action in the 1961/62 season in the FA Cup. The first round clash took two replays to decide the winners after the initial tie at London Road finished 3-3 with the first replay finishing 2-2 at Layer Road. The second replay was played at Carrow Road in Norwich but it was Posh who ran out winners thanks to a hat-trick by George Hudson.
The first time the sides met in League action came the following season. Posh had a comfortable 6-2 win at London Road but fell to a 2-0 defeat towards the end of the season.
There were three clashes between Posh and the U`s last season; two in the League and once in the Capital One Cup first round. Posh won the first clash of last season winning 5-1 in the Cup. Gaby Zakuani opened the scoring just before half-time before the hosts levelled things two minutes into the second half. From that point on it was all Posh though as goals from Tyrone Barnett, Tommy Rowe and two from Lee Tomlin eased Posh in to round two.
In the League, honours were even though as both sides won their respective home match. The U`s won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Macauley Bonne who was celebrating his 18th birthday. The return match at London Road saw Posh ease to a 2-0 win thanks to a goal in each half by Tommy Rowe and Britt Assombalonga.
U`s boss Joe Dunne could still be without Drey Wright and former Posh loanee Josh Thompson. Midfielder Wright is on the way back after sustaining a knee injury on the opening day of the season and defender Thompson suffered a hamstring strain during the warm-up ahead of the Capital One Cup clash at Charlton Athletic. Both players were due to feature in the midweek Under-21 match at Crystal Palace before it was postponed.
David Wright and Sanchez Watt did play for the Under-21s last week at Sheffield United and will be hoping to play some part in the match against Posh.
Loanee George Moncur from West Ham may find himself on the bench after playing three matches in a week. "George played three games in a week. He was dead on his feet," said Dunne. "One thing I am not going to do is run the kid into the ground."
Posh still have a number of players out on the injury list but the squad won`t be as threadbare this week when they travel to Colchester.
Gaby Zakuani is fit again and is chomping at the bit in an effort to get his place back in the starting line-up but he may have to bide his time as Darren Ferguson ponders over whether to change a winning side.
Left-back Kgosi Ntlhe has also returned to fitness and will wait to see what formation Fergie decides to go with. If he sticks with three at the back, Ntlhe may have to be satisfied with a place on the bench.
Loanee winger Kenny McEvoy has recovered from the foot injury he picked up in scoring his first ever League goal against MK Dons while fellow winger Jon Taylor and utility-man Michael Bostwick are both rated as 50/50.
One man hoping to be named on the bench is new signing Marcus Maddison. Maddison put pen to paper in midweek on a four-year deal at London Road after signing from Gateshead. Ferguson said: "Marcus Maddison will be in the squad, but I`m not sure yet whether or not I will throw him straight in. He`s a very good player though."
There will be an unusual player sitting on the bench as a goalkeeping sub. Goalkeeping coach Jimmy Walker has signed playing terms so he can back up Ben Alnwick after the other two goalkeepers are now on loan. Bobby Olejnik is already on loan at Scunthorpe United but Joe Day this week went on loan to League Two side Newport County.
Definitely out of the match are Jack Baldwin, Erhun Oztumer and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. Mendez-Laing limped off early in last weeks match at Bradford with a scan revealing a thigh injury.
"We have one or two players coming back and that does lead to one or two decisions that I have to make selection wise. I have one or two options both in personnel and in terms of the formation.
"The players did well last week at Bradford, but no two games are the same. Colchester will pose a different threat," Ferguson said.
Vital Posh predicts the starting line-up will be:
2 - George Moncur
1 - Magnus Okuonghae
1 - Freddie Sears
4 - Kyle Vassell
1 - Kenny McEvoy
1 - Shaun Brisley
CARL BOYESON will take charge of the match.

He will be assisted by Robert Hyde and Paul Kelly.
The fourth official is Matt Foley.
Colchester is usually a difficult place to go to and despite the poor start the U`s have made, it will be another tricky obstacle for Posh to overcome. Posh have done well so far this season but there are still doubts surrounding the effectiveness of the current players to continue to grind out results.
The return of a number of players should boost the confidence of the Posh squad even further which should also see them get another win.
Posh to win: 0 - 1.
