Former Peterborough United midfielder Danny Kearns has signed for League Two side Carlisle United.

Danny Kearns

It came as a bit of a surprise to some but Danny Kearns, who left Posh at the end of the season following the completion of his contract, has signed for League Two side Carlisle United.

The Cumbrians boss Graham Kavanagh was delighted to capture the young Irishman: "I've been working on this one for ten days so it's good to get it done. I said I wanted to get the spine of the team sorted as quickly as I could and I think we've got that now.

"I've spoken to Darren Ferguson and Paul Cook about him and they both spoke very highly. He's an Irish under-21 international so he's got some good experience," he continued.

"He can play as a number 10, or wide on the left or the right. Danny will add competition right across the midfield. He's a ball carrier and a provider. I think the only thing he needs to improve is scoring goals but he'll provide a lot for the team."

Kearns hasn`t had the best of times at Posh after failing to establish himself and when it looked like he was going to get the nod to start matches following an excellent pre-season in 2012, he picked up a nasty injury against Aston Villa. That injury took its toll as it took a while to recover and he has since spent the remainder of his Posh career out on loan.

The initial loan was at League Two side York City. Kearns earned rave reviews and picked up many man of the match awards. His form didn`t go unnoticed by Posh as he was eventually recalled but strangely, Darren Ferguson refused to play him, instead keeping him on the bench for most of the matches!

After a while, he went out on loan again but this time it was to Rotherham United who had also noticed his form whilst playing against him in his initial loan with York. He made 10 appearances for the Millers as he helped them to the runners-up spot in League Two.

Last season was a similar one in which Kearns was in and out of the squad before making a loan move for the latter part of the season. This time it was at Chesterfield and for the second season running, was involved with a team that gained promotion from League Two but this time it was as Champions.

Many thought Kearns would be joining up with the Spireites again for the forthcoming season but instead, Kearns has opted to join Carlisle United in a two-year deal.

Could he make it three years in a row he is involved in a team being promoted to League One?

Good luck Danny and thanks for all your efforts at Posh.
