Posh Sign Their No.1 Target

Peterborough United left it late but they finally signed their "number one" target and he`s a defender!!

Jack Baldwin signs on transfer deadline day from Hartlepool

Jack Baldwin agreed terms to a four-and-a-half year contract at Posh with moments to spare before the transfer window slammed shut.

The 20-year-old has spent just over two seasons at Hartlepool United and has played in 34 appearances this season scoring four goals. The Pools signed him from non-league Faversham Town in 2011, just before he was about to start university!

As expected, Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony used twitter to make the announcement: "I am delighted to announce the signing of the best young centre-back in the Football League, Jack Baldwin, for 500k. Posh fans will love this young man, trust me!"

MacAnthony also took a swipe at the players that didn`t want to come to Posh: "Been working on this one all week and has been our Number 1 target all month, a lot of top clubs wanted this lad, ambition over greed!!!"

Posh boss Darren Ferguson was delighted to have captured Baldwin as he said: "It is a really good signing. He is a young centre half and I think he is going to be a really top player. We have managed to get it done. Most of the Championship have been watching him and a Premier League club too, but we really like him.

"He reminds me of Ryan Bennett, the way he passes the ball, he is tough enough and he knows we can improve him. It is a signing that excites me. It is an area of the pitch that we needed to strengthen. We have only got three recognised centre backs and Nathaniel Knight-Percival has been doing very well at left-back and I feel I want to keep him there at the minute.

"He is going to be a really good player for us. He has played a lot of games, he has played in midfield too, but we will work with him as a centre half. He has good ability on the ball, he is very elegant, reads the game well and he is the one we have been after for a while now. I am delighted to get it done," Ferguson said.

Baldwins former manager Colin Cooper was disappointed to lose his star defender, who could net the club up to 750,000 depending on add-ons, but had nothing but praise for him: "We didn`t want to sell Jack but when the approach was made by Peterborough earlier this week he made it clear that it was an opportunity he was interested in.

"We have spent time trying to encourage him to stay but once his mind was made up to progress his career in League One, our job was to get the best possible deal for Hartlepool United.

"I spoke about it with the Chairman and the Chief Executive and we all agreed that the deal we`ve been able to finalise after several days of negotiation was in the best financial and beneficial interests of the football club and the player.

"He may only look wiry, but when Jack tackles there are few I`ve seen better. I like the way he tackles, he puts his whole body behind it."

A Hartlepool spokesman added: "The club would like to thank Jack for his full commitment during his time at Victoria Park and wish him and his family all the very best for his future career."
