Posh inflicted Preston`s first League defeat of the weekend but the manager and players were upbeat about the defeat!
The Manager Speaks
Newly crowned Manager of the Month Simon Grayson was quick to back his goalkeeper after the game despite two clangers from his on-loan number one: "You can`t be critical of the lad because he has been fantastic since he has been at the football club.
"You can count on two or three fingers how many mistakes he has made, but, the sign of a good goalkeeper is that when he makes mistakes, he didn`t let anything affect him.
"He was on top form after that with some fantastic saves. It`s fantastic traits to have, character and attitude, to make a mistake and go on and keep producing the performance that he did."
Going into the game, Grayson knew that his side were in for a tough test with Posh sitting in second place in League One and he was full of praise for the front three Posh men after the match: "We knew we were going to be in for a tough game against a very good team. Their front three are as good as any in the division, we just felt that we gave them too much room to play and too much time to dominate the proceedings.
"When we get on the front foot and stop teams from playing, we look a different team and we allowed them too much space to get into their passing routine and we obviously gave them a two goal start.
Grayson made a double substitution at half time to try to shake things up and it certainly perked up Preston although with two goals in the bag, Posh knew exactly what they had to do to see the game out: "I wanted a reaction at half-time and I certainly got that, because second half I thought we were the dominant force, we had 70 per cent of the possession and hit the crossbar two or three times and their 'keeper had some good saves, so we could have quite easily got something out of it, but you can`t give teams two goal starts.
"I have learned that there is a fantastic spirit and a great attitude to not get beat about us, I knew that, but once you go into a changing room at half-time, two goals down, we want a reaction from the players and you can either bury your head in the sand or go out fighting and they did, they came out fighting and took the game to a very strong team who will be up there come the end of the season.
"It was something we knew we had in the team, but they showed today what they are capable of doing when they are up against it.
"We haven`t had to do that too many times, we have lost today for the first time this season and we only lost two or three times in 14, 15 games [last season] so they don`t know what defeat is, they have suffered defeat today and we will try and go back on another unbeaten run.
"When I looked at how they played, I did think about changing our system and putting a midfield player in there and sacrificing one of the strikers, but sometimes you have got to be fair to the players who have done ever so well for us and I thought we could still cause them bother by doing that, but hence we changed it at half-time.
"We got an extra body in there and we got a lot more second balls, got on the front foot and caused them a lot of problems."
Grayson was frustrated at his side not taking any of the chances they created and was also critical of the inconsistent referee although the referee was spot on when not awarding a penalty to Preston in the second half: "In the second half we knew that if we got the next goal we were well and truly in the game and Joe Garner came on and had about four opportunities, we feel he should have had a penalty, he got pushed in the back blatantly which we didn`t get, that`s a free kick anywhere else on the football pitch.
"I don`t think we got too many decisions from the referee today which didn`t help us, but I am not going to use that as an excuse, but we certainly had a host of chances to get back into it."
Preston captain Keith Keane had no complaints after the game as he admitted his side were punished as they never turned up for the first half: "Goals change games, they took their chances and the game changed in their favour, so they have taken their chances and won the game.
"The first half was just a case of a bad day at the office, we didn`t turn up and sometimes you can get away with it, but against better teams like today, you can`t, we got punished and it ended up being too much to come back from.
"We just have to put it down as a bad day, a good team is all about how you react and like I say, today is a bad day, but it is all about how you react for the next game and getting back to positive ways.
"It is a shame because we knew what they were going to be like, we knew they were going to be good, but for whatever reason we just never turned up in the first half.
"We can`t really put our finger on it, we are just disappointed that we knew how tough it was going to be and we didn`t turn up and you get punished against the better teams."
The defeat was Preston`s first defeat in the League this season but Keane knows now what is required to get to the top following games against Posh and other top sides: "We have played against some of the top teams already and we know exactly what it is all about to get promotion."
Lilywhites Fans Comments
Below is a selection of comments on the match from Lilywhites fans:
"It was a nice touch to meet Kevin Davies at the station after the match. Nice bloke. He apologised for the display and agreed it was tough. He thanked me for showing my support. Good lad!"
"I believe we have only conceded the 1st goal twice in competative matches, both times to early Keeper errors, both time we let in a second, both times we dominated the second half and both times we lost 2 - 0...
maybe our goalscorers arent clinical enough, maybe this and maybe that BUT overall its not a bad start to the season and so, like after Burnley, lets kick on again after yesterday"

"Well having not attended the game and only seen the bits on the tv and heard the game on the radio I think I can safely say that the wrong team was picked for this game. This is not a go at anybody just an observation from a far but all in all I think we did ok and although we lost to a decent team we will have learnt a lot, both players and management."
"Just got back, nice weather to travel back in , We had a smashing Stop over in Peterborough, stopped at a place called the Great Northern Hotel.Very comfy very clean i recommend, After the game Met up with the Wife and luckily only a bit of Shopping.
Then we went to a pub called the Cherry Tree had a nice meal, and some freindly banter with the Borough Supporters who were in their..
As for the game Simon got it wrong in the first half -Vastly improved second half , you, cant put the loss entirely down to Rudd, the defence went awol at times, but we Desperately do need a out and out striker. But Simon will get it sorted for the next game im Sure"
"Why play 3 centre backs against a strike force that have been scoring for fun. We should make sure our defence is top notch against teams like Posh.
I feel SG for once got the formation wrong in this match, but with 5 wins on the bounce you probably would not change the side, but we were playing second place in the league. I feel we should have gone from the start a 4-4-2 with KK at right back DB at LB Welsh in front of the back 4 with Wroe as a attacking midfielder, Laid on LM and CH on the right. Never mind 1 loss in 10 games is still doing well. This is just a blip we will go on another run, starting next week."
