The man in charge of the Sky Bet League One Cup match between Peterborough United and Preston North End is CARL BOYESON.
The experienced Carl Boyeson referees a Posh match for the first time in twleve months. The last time came at the start of October 2012 when Posh travelled up to Yorkshire to face fellow strugglers Barnsley. Two goals in the first ten minutes from George Boyd and Tyrone Barnett was enough to see Posh record their second Championship win of the season. Two yellow cards were issued in the match which both went to Posh.
The East Yorkshire official wasn`t due to referee the Barnsley v Posh match but the original official for the match had been arrested by police on suspicion of hacking the accounts of a colleague at the Football Association!!
Boyeson also refereed Preston last season. They lost 3-1 at home to Walsall in January before defeating Tranmere on home soil thanks to a Jeffrey Monakana goal on the stroke of half-time. Rovers received the only yellow card of the game.
Boyeson took up the whistle, at 22, on the suggestion of his friend and work colleague, Wally Jude. 'He told me that I was never going to be a pro footballer so why not referee pro football instead,' Boyeson said. 'So that's what I set out to do. I've been on the National List of referees since 2002 and I reckon I've got a good six or seven years left.
'I'm fit enough and I've got no issues with motivation. I still get that buzz on a Monday morning when I find out which fixture I've got. Sure, I'd love to get into the Select Group, but maybe that's now more for the younger lads coming through. If I got the chance, though, I'd grab it with both hands.'
Jude, the directors' box steward at Hull City's KC Stadium, and Boyeson remain close. And completing the circle, Jude's grandson, Martin, plays in the same youth side as Boyeson's son, Reece. Boyeson Sr also helps to run the team - Hessle Rangers Under-11s, the newly crowned Hull Sunday Boys' Under-11 Drypool League champions.
It is not all work and no play for 41-year-old Carl, a central heating technician. When he can find the time, he enjoys a round of golf and watching most sports. Yet some of his long-distance refereeing appointments can take their toll and he has to call on his wife, Amanda, as a chauffeur.
'I didn't get back from a game at Southend until 2.30am and had to be at work by 6.30,' Boyeson said. 'That's what it can be like sometimes, it can be a bit tiring. Amanda does occasionally share the driving even though she's not really interested in football. She doesn't even watch when I'm doing a live TV game. I think she prefers programmes like Desperate Housewives!'
Boyeson has officiated 8 matches so far this season showing the yellow card 27 times while sending one player off.
Last season, Boyeson refereed 34 matches issuing 83 yellows cards and two red cards. The last match Boyeson took charge of was two weeks ago when over-seeing the 1-1 draw between Oldham Athletic and Crewe Alexandra. Three yellow cards were issued with two of them going to the Alex.
The assistant referees for this match will be Mark Howes and Geoffrey Russell. The fourth official is Andy Newbold.
