The man in charge of the Sky Bet League One match between Rotherham United and Peterborough United is CHRISTOPHER SARGINSON.
Staffordshire-based referee Sarginson has only been refereeing in the Football League for a few seasons but he already has plans to retire from the middle: "I've probably got three seasons left and, at 48, that will be the right time to retire,' he said. 'The younger referees are being pushed through quicker these days and that's the way it should be. But I'd like to stay around in some capacity, perhaps as an assessor, because the game has given me so much and I'd like to give something back.'
He will take some fond memories with him such as running the line in the 2005 FA Vase final at White Hart Lane, when Didcot Town defeated AFC Sudbury 3-2, and in the 2005 second division Play-Off final at the Millennium Stadium, when Southend United beat Lincoln City 2-0 after extra time. He has also had Uefa assignments in Turkey and Denmark. 'Fantastic experiences, all of them,' he said.
Since retiring from club football, he wanted to stay in football and he has done just that progressing through the Northern Premier League, Southern League and Conference to The Football League line in 2001 - and the Premier League line in 2005 - before taking up the whistle four years ago. 'You never stop learning,' Chris, a production manager in the motor industry, said. 'And to work alongside all our top referees has been really beneficial to me.'
Since taking up the whistle, he has officiated six Posh matches but have only won twice! The last match he took charge of came last season when Posh lost 2-1 at London Road to Bristol City. Two Sam Bladock goals gave the Robins victory with Lee Tomlin scoring from the penalty spot in the final minute. Seven yellow cards were issued in that match with four of them going to Posh.
The last match Posh won with Sarginson in the middle came in the 2009/10 Championship season but it certainly didn`t look like Posh were going to win after trailing 2-0 to Reading at half-time. A second-half fightback saw goals from the holy-trinity snatch three points with George Boyds goal coming in the final minute! Two yellow cards were issued in that match which both went to Reading players.
Rotherham have had Sarginson seven times and have been a lot more successful than Posh. They have yet to suffer defeat with Sarginson in the middle and have won five of those seven matches! The last match he officiated the Millers came in November last season when Rotherham won 2-1 at Accrington Stanley. Despite going behind after only two minutes, Daniel Nardiello hit a goal in each half for the win. Two yellow cards were issued which both went to Accrington players.
This season, Sarginson has refereed six matches issuing 14 yellow cards and no red cards. His last match came two weeks ago when Newport County lost 3-2 at home to Morecambe. Four yellow cards were issued with both sides receiving two each. He has officiated one League One match so far this season which saw Oldham beat Port Vale 3-1. Oldham received one of the four yellow cards issued in the match.
Last season, 29 matches were officiated by Sarginson with 69 yellow cards being issued and four red ones.
The assistant referees for the Millers v Posh clash are Nigel Smith and Ollie Yates. The fourth official is Nigel Murphy.
