What are the Peterborough United manager and players saying about the upcoming match with Tranmere Rovers?
It`s been an excellent start to the season results-wise if not performance-wise but the trip to lowly Tranmere will not be as easy as many people think. Posh boss Darren Ferguson certainly thinks his side have a tough task in the north-west: "I have never had an easy time at Tranmere either as a player or a manager, it is always a really tough place to go and Saturday will be no different. I have a lot of respect for Ronnie Moore as a manager and he will have his players fired up for this game. They have some really experienced players in Andy Robinson and Jason Koumas and Prenton Park provides a good atmosphere," said Ferguson.
"They haven't had the best of starts to the campaign, but last season they got off to a flyer and fell away. For us, we know that the performance level needs to improve and the lads have been working hard on the training ground."
After last weekend`s poor performance against Oldham, Fergie may ring the changes but is also mindful that the current crop of players holding onto the starting shirts have won four out of four competitive games this season.
"We didn`t play particularly well on or off the ball last week, but I do have to be mindful that I have 11 players who have won all four matches this season. I will have a difficult decision to make because we have won our matches," Ferguson said.
"I wouldn`t say playing poorly against Oldham was a wake-up call or a kick up the backside because we had the biggest wake-up call of all time on the last day of the last season, but we have competition for places in every position so we those in the team have to keep their standards high.
"It would be good if we can play at our best, but the bottom line is we just want to win. We`ve had many games when we`ve played really well and lost.
"The lads that have been out of the side so far this season have all pleased me greatly. Their attitude has been first-class in training and in the reserve team games," continued Fergie.
"We do have a very strong squad and if I decide to make changes I have no doubt that those who come in will do a good job for us.
"Payne, Knight-Percival, Swanson and Little are in my thoughts for Tranmere, while Jaanai will come back into the squad after scoring another goal for the reserves this week.
One of the players currently banging on the door waiting for his chance is summer signing Jack Payne [pictured above]. The midfielder had an excellent loan period in the second half of last season with Posh but was slightly behind the rest of the Posh players following a delayed transfer from Gillingham.
"I hate sitting on the bench, but the team have been doing so well I can hardly complain.
"I did miss one or two weeks of pre-season while my transfer was being sorted out so I was a bit behind the other lads in terms of fitness, but my levels are where they should be now so if I get the chance to play I must grab it with both hands.
"We must have the best and biggest squad in League One. The competition for places is incredibly strong as there are some quality players who haven`t even made the substitutes` bench yet.
"I`m a holding midfielder really, but I`d play anywhere to get a game at the minute! I`ve played at the base of a midfield diamond or on the right and I`m confident I do a decent job in either position.
"It`s important we keep winning. We`ve had a great start, but we are there to be shot at now. Teams always love to try and take down the ones at the top."
