All Square In Ireland

Peterborough United completed their playing schedule in the Republic of Ireland with two draws while their Under 18s also drew their only match.

Peterborough United had their first competitive action since returning to pre-season and it came while they toured the Republic of Ireland. A "tour" may be misleading as they played two teams based in Dublin!

Shelbourne 1 - 1 Posh

Irish League bottom side Shelbourne provided the first opponents for Posh and it was a good run-out for the majority of the first team squad. Posh opened the scoring with a delightful freekick from Lee TOMLIN after 22 minutes and had numerous other chances in the first half to extend the lead.

Jaanai Gordon-Hutton had two decent efforts in the game. Firstly a 20-yarder curled just wide of the goal and was then denied by the keepers legs moments after the goal.

Shelbourne saw more of the ball in the second half and it was thanks to Bobby Olejnik that Posh came away with a draw as he made three top drawer saves before he was beaten from the penalty spot. It was a poor decision by the referee as the challenge came outside of the box!!

Posh 1st half: Day, Alcock, Zakuani, Brisley, Ntlhe, Anderson, McCann, Kearns, Newell, Tomlin, Gordon-Hutton.

Posh 2nd half: Olejnik, Knight-Percival, Bostwick, Richens, Rowe, Ferdinand, Payne, Ajose, Swanson, Sinclair, Barnett.

UCD 2 - 2 Posh

Posh made a bright start to the match but fell behind early in the first half. Joe Newell had an effort deflected wide shortly afterwards before efforts from Grant McCann (freekick) and Shaq McDonald failed to trouble the home keeper.

Danny Kearns and another McDonald effort both went over the bar before McDonald came close to opening his senior Posh account by hitting the inside of the post.

Yet again, Fergie chose two different sides for each half but it was the home side who found the net again in the second half and it will be one young goalkeeper Alex Lynch will want to forget. The ball had been played back to him but he took too much time on the ball before clearing it as it gave UCD striker Dean CLARKE the chance to close him down and block the clearance. Unfortunately for Posh and for Lynch, the ball rebounded into the goal to put the hosts two goals up.

All was not lost though as Posh picked up their game and found an unlikely hero in the form of Nicky Ajose! A corner from Coulson was flicked on by Bostwick to Ajose who glanced the ball into the net for the first Posh goal.

Just a minute from time, Ajose picked up his second goal. The excellent Jevani Brown picked out the former Manchester United man who curled his shot into the top corner of the net.

Posh 1st half: Lynch, Alcock, Brisley, Zakuani, Ntlhe, McCann, Newell, Kearns, Tomlin, McDonald, Gordon.

Posh 2nd half: Lynch, Ferdinand (sub Richens 70min), Bostwick, Knight-Percival, Rowe, Payne, Coulson, Brown, Swanson, Ajose, Sinclair (sub Barnett 70min)

UCD U19s 1 - 1 Posh U18s

Posh Under 18`s played their first match on the tour against the under 19`s of UCD. Just as the senior squad has done, the Under 18`s played different sides in both halves but it was the first half team that fell behind to a penalty.

The recent signing of Irishman Robert Duggan was an inspired one as he dominated midfield and created a number of chances however it wasn`t until the second half that the Posh youngsters drew themselves level thanks to a fine goal by 16-year-old Ty PHILLIPS.

The city youngster used his speed and strength to latch on to the ball and place the ball past the UCD keeper.
