Gills Playing Mind Games Over Payne

Gillingham are playing tough in Peterborough United's attempt to prise midfielder Jack Payne from them.

Jack Payne v Sheff Weds

The midfielder joined Posh on loan from Gillingham at the back-end of last season and formed an impressive partnership with Grant McCann and the other midfielders as he found himself a permanent fixture in the starting line-up.

On his return to Gillingham, following the end of the Championship season, Posh were hoping to conclude a deal but Gillingham are after a sizeable fee.

Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes the deal will not now go ahead but Director of Football, Barry Fry, hasn't given up hope yet as he said:'We did have an option to buy Jack Payne but we thought the amount of money was a bit high.

'We've tried tried to do a deal with a player or two that we've got that Martin Allen [Gillingham's manager] is interested in but Paul Scally [Gillingham Chairman] has turned those deals down.

'Paul [Scally] told me Jack was going to Birmingham for 750 grand but I told him they haven't got 750 pence let alone 750 grand,' Fry continued.

'I think Paul's playing a bit of a game like we all do at this stage of the season.

'He is a very good player and one which the gaffer and the chairman would love to have but we can't agree terms yet at this moment in time.

'I wouldn't say it's dead'

Payne is Fergie's number one transfer target and quite rightly so. If Posh can hold on to the majority of their squad and add the likes of Payne to it, we should have a very good season.

Hopefully Fry and Scally can come to an agreement over Payne but for now it's a matter of waiting to see what happens.
