Posh Sign Payne

Posh Sign Payne

Peterborough United have signed Gillingham midfielder Jack Payne on loan until the end of the season.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed: 'Delighted to announce Jack Payne has joined us on loan till end of season with option in place for permanent transfer in the summer!

'Jack is quality young midfielder who we were close to signing last summer. Better late then never. Will compliment our young squad.'

The 21-year-old came through the youth ranks at Priestfield, signing as a first year trainee at the start of the 2008-09 campaign.

He received the club's Young Player of the Year trophy for three seasons in row before one-time Posh target Paulo Gazzaniga won the award last season.

Playing alongside former Posh players Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale, Payne has made 21 appearances for the Gills this season scoring four goals.

He is a holding midfield player and is likely to fill the role that Darren Ferguson has failed to successfully fill since loanee George Thorne returned to parent club West Bromwich Albion.

Welcome to London Road Jack.
