Zakuani Confirmed In DR Congo Final Squad

Peterborough United defender has been confirmed in the 23-man squad for DR Congo ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

Gabriel Zakuani

The 26-year-old central defender, voted last seasons Player of the Season for Posh, today [Wednesday 9th January] confirmed that he has made the final squad of 23 players for DR Congo's campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tweeting from Africa, Zakuani said: 'It's official I have made the 23 man squad for DR Congo's African Cup of Nations adventure. Thank you God.'.

Zakuani will be involved in the three group games that are scheduled for the following dates:

20/01/13: Ghana v DR Congo (15:00)
24/01/13: Niger v DR Congo (18:00)
28/01/13: DR Congo v Mali (17:00 in Durban)

It means he will definitely miss the home game with Hull City on 19th January and the away trip to the Reebok the following week when Posh face Bolton Wanderers (unless Bolton are involved in the FA Cup). He has already missed FA Cup defeat to Norwich City and will be missing from this weekends match at Nottingham Forest.

If DR Congo make it through their group games, the quarter finals are on 2rd and 3rd February meaning he will also miss the home match against Burnley.

Success at that stage would mean he could also miss the home match with Leicester City on 9th February.

It is a massive achievement for Zakuani and a proud moment for everyone connected with Posh.

Good luck Gaby.
