Birmingham City 1 - 0 Peterborough United
Location: St Andrews
Date: 1st September, 2012
Attendance: 14,929 (629 Posh fans)
Darren Ferguson is "sick of losing" but with only one shot on target during the game, what does he expect?
After a much improved performance in which Posh dominated the match with 57% possession, Posh still came away from the match with another loss thanks to a freak goal.
Posh now have two weeks to review how things have gone on so far and how they can correct the situation before they travel to Burnley who are just two places and three points ahead of Posh having won one and lost three of their opening four matches.
The Birmingham match gave Posh the ideal opportunity to pick up their first points of the season as the Blues had just one point to their name prior to the match. Posh finally had million pound forward Tyrone Barnett [pictured below] making his first appearance of the season having finally recovered from an injury he picked up towards the end of last season…and manager Darren Ferguson was full of praise: "Tyrone was immense. Considering it was his first start of the season he did very, very well and I`m confident of a big season for him".
Fergie was more critical towards some of his more senior players: "What does concern me is the fact that a couple of our better players from last season have not yet stepped up to the mark this season.
"I need to address that, but no-one should panic as Reading took one point from the first six games last season and won the league.
"I`m not saying we will win the league, but every team has good and bad runs in a season and we are hopefully getting our bad one out of the way early on."
Positive words from Fergie but even when Posh were on a poor run last season, we were still creating chances but the match against Birmingham yielded just ONE SHOT ON TARGET!!! This is surely a worrying statistic that Posh must seriously look at along with the succession of goals they are gifting the opposition.
Barnett was pleased with his first appearance of the season and was also upbeat about the rest of the season: "I was pleased to get through 90 minutes and I felt I did okay. I will get better and so will the team, we are all confident of that.
"It`s impossible to play as well as we have been playing and not start winning. We had a lot of possession in the second half at Birmingham, but the ball wouldn`t fall for us in the box.
"We definitely should have got something from the game, but we are all convinced the luck will turn our way soon. On another day we could have scored four or five goals.
"We also know we have to cut out the silly mistakes that are costing us goals. I had a part in the only goal at Birmingham because it came from a silly free-kick that I conceded.
"It`s been a terrible run of results, but we will put that to the back of our minds and start working towards the next game."
Once again, it was a mixed bag of comments from fans following the game. The following is a selection of quotes from Twitter and other social media sites relating to the game:
We have been trying to cut out the 'silly mistakes' and 'individual errors' for 4 years, it would be nice if we could stop talking about it and start doing it.
I think we have a lot to feel positive about, the squad is much better than last season, the only weakness comparatively is the loss of Bennett weakening the central defence, and Bostwick looks like he can do the role if needed. Again, when we have a fully fit squad and are still losing then it might be time to worry, but we are only 2 points down match for match, which is probably to be expected for a major squad overhaul and a much tougher league
Thought we played really well especially Swanson and Barnett, had loads of chances deserved draw or maybe win.
Vital Posh Viewpoint
Another defeat but we dominated the possession. The main problem is we`re not getting our efforts on target often enough!
One shot on target is criminal. Is this down to players coming back from injury or are the players just not good enough for this level. Only time will tell but these two weeks are vital for Posh to build up their confidence, get players back from injury and get them fit and start playing the way we know they are capable of.
Michael Bostwick [pictured below] again showed his flexibility by dropping into the central defensive position vacated by Gaby Zakuani who went off at half-time with a head injury. It`s slightly worrying that our best central defender could turn out to be a midfielder!!
With visits to Burnley and Hull whilst hosting Bristol City and Wolves this month, Posh should realistically be looking to pick up a minimum of six points. Hopefully Posh will kick-off their winning run in their next outing at Burnley but whatever happens, this season is going to be long and eventful.
