Opening Day Disappointment For Posh

Opening Day Disappointment For Posh

Leicester City 2 - 0 Peterborough United
Location: King Power Stadium
Date: 18th August, 2012
Attendance: 23,863 (1868 Posh fans)

Both sides went into this game with confidence after 4-0 League Cup first round wins in midweek. The excitement that the first game of the season brings was definitely there, and both teams wanted to start their campaign`s with wins.

Posh began with the same starting line-up for the second game in a row Emile Sinclair returned to the substitutes bench, replacing Nicky Ajose, who has completed another loan move away from the Posh, this time to league 1 side, Crawley Town.

The Foxes also started with the same team that beat Torquay United 4-0 in midweek, handing championship debuts to a number of players, including former Posh transfer target, Jamie Vardy, as well as their two signings from Manchester United, Matty James and Ritchie De Laet.

The first chance of the game came from Leicester, who had a free kick on the left hand side, just outside the area. Ben Marshall, Leicester`s free kick specialist, took the kick and whipped it into the middle. It looked as though the final touch came off a Posh player, but the referee signalled a goal kick.

Posh were struggling to make chances as they lacked the cutting edge in the final third, they stroked the ball around well in their own half, and into Leicester`s half, but as they looked for the final pass, they conceded possession a number of times.

Jamie Vardy had a chance to break the deadlock, but he scuffed his half volley into the arms of Bobby Olejnik. Posh continued to play it short around the back four, but Leicester had cottoned on to this, and piled the pressure on the defenders, as Leicester started to dominate.

Ben Marshall went on a promising run down Leicester`s left, but a fantastic tackle by Bostwick halted him. It was Marshall and Bostwick involved a minute later, as Marshall put in a poor tackle on the Posh new man, earning a yellow card in the process.

Jamie Vardy`s hard work, and Craig Alcock + Shaun Brisley`s poor defending almost lead to the first goal, but Vardy`s square was well cut out by Bostwick, but had to be saved by Olejnik, they did very well between them.

Another ball in by Marshall almost lead to a goal, but Beckford`s header went inches wide of Olejnik`s post, Posh needed the half time whistle. Leicester won a number of corners that were dealt with by Posh, before the sprinklers came on while the ball was in play! This brought the loudest cheer of a poor first half. The last chance of the half fell to Lloyd Dyer after a good move, but his shot was a couple of yards wide of the mark.

Half-time: Leicester City 0 - 0 Peterborough United

No changes were made at half time, but Posh were attacking the end where their own fans were based. And Posh had the first chance of the half, as Paul Taylor`s shot was parried away by Kasper Schmeichel.

Joe Newell misplaced another pass soon after, which led to another Foxes corner. And this brought the opening goal of the game as Wes MORGAN fired a powerful header past the helpless Olejnik, from Marshall`s dangerous delivery. Gaby Zakuani clearly felt he was jumped on by Wes Morgan, and made his point known to the referee, but the goal stood. Pictures emerged after the game of Morgan jumping on him with his arms around him, and the goal should not have been allowed. (Picture can be seen below).

Posh were now under serious pressure. Leicester were attacking in waves and the defence were struggling to deal with it. Vardy had the next chance; he headed just wide from another good ball in by Marshall.

Tomlin had a chance to shoot, but opted to attempt to pass, which was a poor one, a goal kick was given. Leicester were winning every tackle and second ball, they looked much sharper than the Posh side. Marshall took on the next shot for the Foxes, but fired wide.

Dyer was given another chance after Tomlin`s lazy play saw the pass to him intercepted. Dyer`s shot was fairly poor, and didn`t hit the target. Zakuani was forced into an acrobatic clearance as the Foxes went close again.

Matty James was withdrawn by the hosts, and Andy King was his replacement. Dyer missed another chance shortly after the change, and it was 1-0 after an hour.

Taylor`s frustration forced him to turn to greed, as his shot went well wide from around 20 yards. The fans were becoming increasingly frustrated with the want away forward. Emile Sinclair was brought on for Joe Newell, to give Posh another option up front.

Leicester piled on the pressure furthermore and had a number of chances, with the majority missing the target. Olejnik commanded his area well, coming out to collect 3 or 4 crosses from the Leicester wide men.

But finally, Leicester made it 2, after some poor marking by Brisley, Andy KING fired the ball into the top corner to send the home fans into raptures, with a section of the crowd doing 'the Poznan`. Poor defending all round again led to the goal, but it was a well taken right footed shot from the substitute that put the game out of sight.

Sinclair had a number of chances for Posh, but they were all either wide or straight at Schmeichel, who had very little to do all game. The last chance fell to Posh, but their corner was cleared away from danger, and the final whistle was eventually blown, to end Posh`s misery.

Full-time: Leicester City 2 - 0 Peterborough United

Vital Posh Viewpoint

It was a very disappointing opening day for the Posh, as no one put in a notable performance. Taylor frustrated the fans throughout, as his inability to look up and pass the ball became more and more aggravating.

But only 1 game has been played and there is still plenty of time to put everything right. Starting with a game on Tuesday against Millwall, in what could turn out to be a relegation 6 pointer (but lets hope not).
