'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Opposition View - Paul Sturrock - Southend

Inexperience proves costly for Sturrocks Southend as they lost 4-0 at Peterborough United.

Southend manager Paul Sturrock was left ruing his inexperienced midfield as they were dealt a lesson by Posh. He felt his side lacked experience and confidence during the game against the Championship side.

"I think I have too many young players that are showing their inexperience and lack of confidence.

"In centre midfield, we are playing two wide players and another who was in and out of the team last year.

'The engine room is the most important part of any football club, right down the middle. At this minute in time we're soft-centred.

'[Tonight] has exposed the fact that we can't do it without four or five players who are missing today.

'It is showing we need men not boys, the young players need a hand. That's something I'm going to have to look into.'

The defeat wasn't down to the lack of effort though and some could say a bit of over-enthusiasm meant three of the Shrimpers ended up in the referees notebook!

Southend are lacking in numbers in midfield following players being released last season and others being injured. They host Accrington Stanley in their first League Two match of the season on Saturday and Sturrock knows he needs more strength in his side: "The players know they have let themselves down again," he added. "The second half was better but the horse had bolted by then, saying that we showed a bit more gumption.

"We won`t face a side like this in League Two but we should be doing better than this.

"If we don`t battle and fight in our league and think we can out play teams then we will have the same problems as we are having today."
