Goalkeeping Rumours At Posh
With Posh looking like losing both their senior goalkeepers, who could be incoming to take over?
Joe Lewis has already left the London Road outfit and could be on the verge of signing for perennial play-off team Cardiff City while Paul Jones is unable to agree terms for a new contract, Posh are on the look out for a new number one.
Youngster Joe Day is the only keeper remaining on the books at Posh but is too inexperienced to take over the jersey vacated by Jones and Lewis.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson has confirmed he has his eye on a keeper, but who could it be?
Many names have been bandied about but the ones cropping up more often than most are:
• Liam O'Brien - Played 18 times for Barnet this season. He`s only 20 years-old so fits into our criteria.
• Tom Heaton - Released by Cardiff City and could be replaced by Joe Lewis. Rumoured to have signed for his former Cardiff boss Dave Jones at Sheffield Wednesday so he may not be heading our way.
• Tomasz Kuszczak - finished this season on loan at Championship rivals Watford and is looking for a move away from Manchester United where he dropped down to their fourth choice goalkeeper. Now aged 30, he doesn`t fit into our criteria.
• Ben Amos - currently Manchester Uniteds third choice goalkeeper but finished the 2010/11 season on loan at League One outfit Oldham Athletic.
It was Amos` name that was mentioned a lot over the weekend with a reported £400,000 deal in place!
He has already played for Posh in the past when he signed on loan during the disastrous 2009/10 Championship season. He only played one game for Posh during that time when Posh lost 2-1 to Burnley in October 2009.
The 22-year-old has played 26 League games in total, 25 of which were while out on loan from his parent club, Manchester United. He has played 3 League Cup games for United as well as 1 game in Europe.
Amos is an England youth international, having played for his country at the Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19, and Under-20 levels. He was called up to the Under-21 squad in 2011 for their friendly match against Iceland, but he was an unused substitute. He could feature in this years GB Olympics football team.
Would Amos be a decent keeper for Posh? He certainly fits the criteria in being young and hungry but after Posh got their fingers burnt last season when buying striker Nicky Ajose from Manchester United for a reported £300,000 only to play less than 30 minutes of football, would this be a good investment?
Obviously time will tell if Amos is the one that Fergie Junior brings in but whoever it is, Posh need to ensure it is the right person as the goalkeeping position is a crucial position to fill.
Posh fans will also need to get behind him and not lose faith in him as quickly as they did with Lewis and Jones. A good backing from the fans boosts players confidence and next season could turn out to be tougher than this season.
