Head to Head - Peterborough -Vs- Brighton

Vital Posh looks at previous matches between Peterborough United and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Peterborough United welcome fellow Championship newcomers Brighton to London Road on Saturday looking to keep their recent good home form going.

Posh and The Seagulls have played each other on 33 occasions in the League with Brighton just ahead with 14 League wins compared to 11 wins by Posh.

These two teams last met earlier this season when Brighton triumphed 2-0 thanks to goals from Craig Noone and Ryan Harley condemning Posh to their second defeat of the season. That result sent Brighton to the top of the Championship while Posh dropped from 5th place to 8th. Former Posh legend Craig Mackail-Smith played in that match - the first time since making the move from London Road to the AMEX in the summer - but he couldn`t break through the Posh backline.

Last Time Out at London Road

The last time Brighton played at London Road was last season when both teams battled their way out of League One.

Going into this match, Brighton were League leaders by six points after just 13 games while Posh had made a good start to life under Gary Johnson and sat in 3rd place on goal difference (behind 2nd place Bournemouth).

A crowd of over 10,000 arrived at London Road hoping for an entertaining match between two of the leading teams in League One, but the referee had other ideas!

Johnson restored Ryan Bennett, Charlie Lee, James Wesolowski and Nat Mendezlaing to the starting line-up but it was the visitors who started the brighter with forward Glen Murray in particular causing the Posh backline problems.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis had to be at his best in this game and it was after only seven minutes, he was called on to produce his first excellent save from Murray who had been put through by Gary Dicker. Bridcott was next to try his luck, this time from long-range which Lewis managed to tip over the bar for a corner.

Craig Mackail-Smith was causing his usual problems for the opposition as he often found himself one on one with the last defender, but couldn`t make the most of the chances that fell his way.

Brighton midfielder Kishisev was dominating proceedings from centre midfield and as such, Brighton were able to knock the ball around with ease.

The Seagulls got their noses in front after just 16 minutes when a free-kick from Dicker found Ashley BARNES who headed past Lewis.

With Posh struggling to contain Brighton, their efforts were dealt a massive blow by the referee after 27 minutes. A coming together of George Boyd and Ashley Barnes which saw Boyd get kneed in the face while Boyd got his hand-bag out to retaliate. The referee who had not seen the incident but knew something had happened decided to send Boyd off!! He must`ve had eyes in the back of his head!

Brighton had a chance to double their lead moments later when a clash of the Bennett`s saw Posh`s Bennett bring down Brighton`s Bennett to concede a penalty. Bennett took the kick himself but Lewis produced a tremendous save.

Johnson decided enough was enough and decided to make changes. McLean made way for Lee Frecklington in an attempt to bolster the midfield which was being over-run.

A set-piece by Brighton led to their second goal when Bennett`s corner was flicked on at the near post before falling kindly for CALDERON to poke the ball into the net. Calderon could`ve added another just before half-time but Lewis produced an amazing double save.

Half-time: Peterborough United 0 - 2 Brighton and Hove Albion

The second half went much the same way as the first with Brighton having plenty of the play although certain players didn`t like some of the "firm" challenges Posh were making and in some cases no-contact challenges which resulted in players such as Calderon dive and roll around in agony in an attempt to win a free-kick before jumping to his feet with no ill effects when realising the referee wasn`t buying his acting!

What they needed to do that for as they were winning 2-0 and dominating the match, I don`t know.

A Kishisev volley was pushed over the bar by Lewis before the ball found the back of the net on 56 minutes only to be ruled out for offside.

Posh were creating chances themselves as both Wesolowski and Mendez-Laing saw shots go wide of the Brighton goal.

A second penalty of the game was then awarded after 62 minutes when Lewis caught Bennett who went flying! Bennett passed penalty duties to BARNES who made no mistake in dispatching the ball past Lewis for goal number three.

Lewis was definitely keeping the score down as he had to make more vital saves, this time to deny Murray before seeing Barnes hit the crossbar with the rebound. Baz then fired straight at Lewis.

Chris Whelpdale, who had come on to replace the injured substitute Frecklington, was presented with an opportunity to pull a goal back but did his usual trick in taking one touch too many before firing high and wide!

That was the last chance for Posh, but Brighton had further chances as first a Bennett header went wide of the post before Barnes hit the bar from the edge of the area. The final effort on the Posh goal was by a Posh player!! An attempted clearance by Charlie Lee went narrowly past the post!

Final Score: Peterborough United 0 - 3 Brighton & Hove Albion
