Stick or Twist?

Stick or Twist?

Over the past few weeks, Posh have suffered a number of injuries to players ruling them out of action for various lengths of time.

Right back Mark Little is currently recovering from a hernia operation while midfielders Grant McCann, Lee Tomlin and Lee Frecklington have all suffered injuries in the last two games.

If you add into the equation the number of players currently out on loan, Posh have been forced to name youngsters, such as 15 year old Jaanai Gordon-Hutton, on the substitutes bench just to make up the numbers.

On a positive note, Manchester United loanee Scott Wootton, who himself has been out of action for 10 weeks following a training ground injury, has returned to London Road and is back in contention.

Boss Ferguson is more than happy to have Wootton back in the fold as he gives him various options as he commented to www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk: "I like Scott Wootton. I think he`s a very good footballer and he is an option for me in midfield.

"I could play him in the holding midfield role and release Ryan Tunnicliffe further forward.

"We will be a bit thin on the ground in midfield, but we will just have to get on with it and work with what we have.

"We still have plenty of talent to choose from, although if we pick up more injuries I might have to look at bringing in a player or two.

"I won`t recall anyone because it`s midfielders we need.

However, should Posh battle on with the limited resources they currently have or should they delve into the loan market?

One thing that has been apparent is the strength in squad we have as players like Kearns, Newell, Tunnicliffe have all come in and played well. But if we pick up more knocks, we could be struggling to fill the gaps further though.

Despite shipping goals for fun this season (again!), we do have cover in this area with both Josh Thompson and Scott Wootton waiting to take their chance.

Things can`t be said that we have plenty of cover for the midfield and forward places.

Two Recognized Forwards!

We are down to two recognized forwards in Emile Sinclair and Paul Taylor. George Boyd could play up front but he poses his most threat down the left of midfield. Tomlin should be back in a couple of weeks to add an extra dimension but with Ball and Ajose not exactly knocking the goals in for fun whilst playing for their League One loan clubs (well, Ajose can`t even make the bench of struggling Scunthorpe!), isn`t this an area Posh should be looking at?

Posh were reportedly interested in Cliftonville striker Rory Donnelly and Shamrock Rovers forward Karl Sheppard .

Donnelly looks as though he will be on his way to the Premier League after Cliftonville accepting a bid from Swansea while Liverpool have also registered their interest in the player.

Sheppard has also attracted attention from other British clubs so it would be a tough ask to get him to Posh…if indeed we are interested in him.

Should we be looking to bring another forward in? If so, who would you like to bring in…and be realistic! Add your thoughts in the comment section below.

A String of Midfield Injuries

Posh were first struck with the medial ligament injury to skipper Grant McCann and then the following week, Lee Frecklington and Lee Tomlin both suffered injuries leaving the midfield department looking a bit sparse.

Youngsters Ryan Tunnicliffe and Daniel Kearns both came in to start last weeks match and did very well; Kearns even picked up the Vital Posh Man of the Match accolade. Joe Newell has also had a few brief substitute appearances in the last couple of matches and has performed well.

Again, we are rather bare for additional players to come in if we pick up more injuries. Surely this is an area we must look at strengthening?

Although Grant McCann is playing well this season, he is getting to the twilight of his career so we should surely be looking at a long-term replacement. Ryan Tunnicliffe did the basics well when he deputized at the base of the diamond against Coventry but he will be returning to his parent club either in January or the end of the season.

Who could we get in and when should we try to get them in?

I believe Fergie will resist getting someone in permanently in January but he may be forced to enter the loan market to bolster his squad.

By entering the loan market, it is likely that he will have to look at young Premier League players who are looking to get first team games under their belt. One such player looking for a loan move is familiar with the Posh surroundings…Tottenham Hotspurs Jake Livermore.

Livermore`s manager Harry Redknapp has hinted at loaning his fringe players in January and he is a player Posh Chairman would be happy to see back at the club when answering questions on Twitter, albeit for a few months. Livermore has played regularly in the Europa League this season but has only been on the fringes of the first team for their Premier League games.

Livermore is quoted in The Sun: "I`ll keep my options open for January and see where it leaves us.

"Would I consider a loan? If it`s the right club and they play a certain style, yes.

"Ultimately, it is down to myself and the gaffer. But I`ll just keep in his face and push on from there."

Another player looking for a loan to the Championship is Manchester United`s Oliver Norwood.

Norwood has spent the first half of the season at League One outfit Scunthorpe…alongside former Red Devil and current Posh player, Nicky Ajose. His loan spell expires in January and he`d be keen to move to a Championship team. Could Posh be prepared to take another United player on loan?

'Before I joined Scunthorpe, the gaffer pulled me and said he wanted me to go to a Championship club at that time, but Alan Knill came in and said I would play,' Norwood told skysports.com.

'He likes Alan Knill, he likes the way he plays football and I think it has done me good coming here.

'I have learnt the horrible side of the game. You have got to get your tackles in, win your headers and stop the opponent from playing and I am grateful to Alan Knill for giving me the chance to prove to people I can play at this level and play at a higher level.

'My time at Scunthorpe expires in January and I spoke to [United reserve team boss] Warren Joyce and I mentioned to him about January and he said they had not looked that far forward as yet and he just told me to keep performing and playing the way I have done and let other people worry about that.

'Hopefully a couple of Championship clubs will want to take me but it is a bit far to be looking that far ahead yet.'

If Posh went down the route of looking to bring someone in permanently either in January or the summer, who should we go for?

Paul Coutts? Fergie is an admirer of his but MacAnthony tweeted "great lad and player who is now captain of Preston so doubt would be allowed to come". He also tweeted that that ship had sailed long ago!

Michael O`Connor? We were rumoured to be interested in him during the summer but nothing came of it.

Kane Ferdinand? Currently with Southend and plays as a defensive midfielder who also chips in with his fair share of goals.

All three are young so they fit into the criteria set out by the club. They are also good players with a lot of potential.
