Players impress despite defeat

A Peterborough United team made up of the Development Team and 4 senior players put up a good contest against Premiership side Queens Park Rangers on Monday afternoon.

Despite going down 2-1 at QPR`s training ground, there were some good displays in the difficult playing conditions.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis was in impressive form having denied a QPR side full of professional players, including Rob Hulse, Lee Cook and Jason Puncheon, on numerous occasions.

Daniel Kearns and young forward Jaarnai Gorgan-Hutton also caused problems for QPR, but it was Lee Tomlin, playing at the top of the diamond, who stole the show.

Peterborough United Director of Football, Barry Fry, confirmed to www.theposh.com that Tomlin was the best player on the pitch by a mile. "It was a very good workout and the QPR officials were very complimentary in the way that our young lads played. Lee was the best player out there, but there were some strong performances from Joe, Daniel Kearns and Gordan-Hutton up front - he caused them problems." Fry continued.

QPR broke the deadlock on 23 minutes when Lee Cooks in-swinging set-piece caused problems for Posh and although defender Taylor Parmenter had the initial header, the goal went down as an own goal by Posh defender Josh Thompson!

Striker Mo Shariff tested Lewis out after a Cook cross was neatly headed into the path of Shariff but Lewis managed to palm the effort over the bar.

Tomlin took things into his own hands just after the break when he went on an amazing run down the left flank and finished it with an impressive drive past QPR`s keeper Radek Cerny.

Unfortunately, Posh could not hold on to the draw as QPR pinched the win with a superb 25-yard strike that Lewis had no chance with.

Head of Youth Dave Robertson said to www.theposh.com that he was delighted with his youngsters: "Every QPR player was a pro, we had just four and I think that says a lot about how well we played. I think it was a really good performance. It was great that Jaanai and Jacob [Joyce] up front got 90 minutes under their belts and we had a 16-year-old in Dan Lawler in midfield.

"The pro's were very good, in particular Lee Tomlin, who was magnificent at the top of the diamond. He took his goal very well and caused them all sorts of problems." Robertson commented.

Posh: Lewis, Nthle (sub Grant 30min), Thompson, Richens (sub Butt 70min), Ralph, Kearns, Wickham, Lawler, Tomlin, Joyce, Gordan-Hutton.

QPR: Cerny, Harriman, Parmenter, Perone, Shariff, Andrade, Puncheon, Ephraim, Cook, Hulse, Hewitt

Tomlin has finished serving a 3 match suspension following his sending off against Leeds United. He will be available for selection for Posh`s next match on 19th November at Europa League team Birmingham City.
