McCann to start against Serbia

Northern Ireland play Serbia for only the third ever time on Friday night (2nd September) with manager Nigel Worthington expected to name Peterborough United midfielder Grant McCann in his starting line-up.

The Posh captain will win his 35th cap for the Irish if he plays in Belfast against a Serbian team that beat the Irish 2-1 in March this year. That game was played behind closed doors in Belgrade after UEFA punished Serbia for failing to control their fans.

Both countries will be missing key players with the Irish missing Rangers Kyle Lafferty and Celtics Paddy McCourt. Serbia will be missing Manchester Uniteds Nemanja Vidic, Juventus' Milos Krasic and Birmingham's giant forward Nikola Zigic.

The last and only time these two countries met on Irish soil, Serbia ran out 1-0 winners.
