Hartlepool 2-0 Peterborough

From Vital Hartlepool:

Goals from Peter Hartley and Gary Liddle were enough to push aside promotion favourites Peterborough.

Conceding 13 goals in the last 4 home games has not filled any home supporter with confidence but today's match saw a complete and superb performance as Hartlepool beat Peterborough.

The woodwork denied Pools in the ninth minute after a whipping ball from Austin found Monkhouse who headed against the post. Peterborough were not challenging the Hartlepool defence until late in the first half when Mackail Smith volleyed an effort at goal.

Pools broke the deadlock a minute before the interval after the awarding of a quite dubious corner.

Evan Horwood swung it in from the right and Peter Hartley met the cross at the near post to thump a header into the back of the net.

An expected onslaught from Peterborough in retaliation to what was a poor first half performance did not ensue instead Pools kept it tight and battled through.

Kean produced two great saves to prevent Tomlin and Boyd from drawing level for Peterborough.

Peterborough's Tomlin was sent off for a high challenge on McSweeney in the 82nd minute which set Pools up for the home victory as Peterborough relented and could not find their way back into the game.

Armann Bjornsson's through ball found Gary Liddle in the late stages of the game who slotted home from 25 yards.
