The removal from office of Gareth Southgate will have struck a chord with many a Championship manager.
Southgate`s Middlesbrough side, relegated form the Premier League last season, were handily placed just a point below the leaders. They`d also, prior to his sacking, just won a home game; however, it appears that the decision to sack Southgate had been made prior to that fixture.
Middlesbrough`s home gates have plummeted and reports suggest the income through the turnstiles isn`t sufficient to keep the stadium going thereby prompting the normally reserved Steve Gibson to wield the axe. Gibson has, with previous incumbents of the job, given his managers more support than they probably deserve and has always backed them with cash.
Could Middlesbrough have reached a milestone in their existence? Is it do or die this season? Who knows but what`s worrying for us is this is happening to a side that flirts with the big boys but on gates that are double ours struggles to survive.
Now we acknowledge their wage bill is probably higher than ours bit it worries me that this could be the same route our club looks to be heading for! With promotion to the Premier League in our plans, it just shows the dangers that await you if you cannot hold on to that status, the financial sharks bite very hard and very quick!
