Any fears that Posh would exit the Carling Cup last night, against recently relegated Newcastle, were blown away as Posh gave, probably, their best display of the season.
With 10,298 packed into London Road, Posh were to carve out 22 shots on target compared to just one from our esteemed visitors.
In fact the biggest mystery of the night relates to how Posh didn`t at least double the two goals they netted in a pulsating first forty-five minutes.
The first of those came in the 20th minute when Craig Mackail-Smith continued his fine run of fine heading home an assist from the lively George Boyd.
The second, in the 32nd minute, was a rarity a goal from Tom Williams who wheeled away in celebration after netting his first goal in five years, once again with George Boyd providing the assist.
Newcastle never really looked like getting back into the game and matters were not helped when Danny Guthrie received a red card for a second bookable offence. Indeed, but for the goalkeeping prowess of Krul, Newcastle would have returned north, up the A1, on the back of a hammering.
Afterwards their manager, Chris Hughton, waffled on about it all being his fault after making nine changes and giving four teenagers their debuts, remarking about the change in personnel,
"It was solely my decision. But unfortunately, it was too much for some of them."
Sorry Chris, but the way we played last night we`d have beaten any eleven you could have picked from your squad - we were that good!![]()
