With Craig Mackail-Smith undergoing tests to establish the root cause of his current groin predicament there were some pundits who questioned the wisdom of Darren Ferguson when he explained he was only looking to bring in one more player before the season starts, a defender.

It was suggested that with Mackail-Smith struggling we may find ourselves a little out of cover for the forward positions, well that was until last night.

His hat trick showed all the predatory skills a top class striker needs and perhaps Darren Ferguson realised all along that although he didn`t make a first team appearance last season he has the ability to provide the back-up we need at Championship level
