'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Posh 1 Cobblers 0

Well what a do that was!

Despite being a man short for eighty-three minutes and riding our luck a little, we still managed to take all three points and keep our second position in League One.

Indeed, all the top three won (no need to look any further south than that) with Leicester winning away from home at Millwall and MK Dons giving Oldham a severe thumping.

For the fixture Darren Ferguson reverted to a more familiar looking Posh side with Craig Mackail-Smith, our top scorer, restored to the starting eleven after his good second half performance off the bench on Tuesday evening.

For all our pre-match bluster worrying about Leon Constantine and the fact former players tend to score against former employers, the lad wasn`t even in the starting eleven.

However, nothing could have prepared us for the start we were to witness with Mr Oliver, after only seven minutes, showing Gabriel Zakuani a straight red card.

To be honest, he didn`t have much choice as Zakuani clipped the heels of the Northampton debutant, Ikechi Anya, as he bore down on goal. From the resulting free kick Northampton, courtesy of Danny Jackman, rattled the post, a feat Aaron McLean was to do down the other end shortly after.

Posh, a man down, were a little under the cosh but still managed to take the lead in the 33rd minute. Coutts drifted over a free kick and the dependable and very versatile Charlie Lee, rose to head home his fourth goal of the season.

The second half saw Northampton hit the woodwork again, this time when Andy Holt headed a Jackman corner against the bar. But Posh held firm and as the Northampton team return across the border to Northamptonshire they`ll be left rueing late chances that fell to Constantine. The first of which he blazed over the bar and the second of which was cleared off the line by Chris Westwood.

Three more points in the bank as the season begins to get really exciting!

How are the nerves folks?

Well done Posh, a deserved victory. We may have created far more chances and had much more possesion, but it's goals that count, and the scoreline doesn't lie!

A good three points and that's twelve from twelve in the last four games. Gives you that bit of breathing space for that automatic promotion spot.

a cracking result considering you played with 10 men for most of the game.
