And there we were, on Friday, speculating that Posh would be occupying the lofty height of second position come Saturday evening.
So much for taking on board the caution offered by Darren Ferguson who warned us that Southend United shouldn`t be taken too lightly.
Hopefully it`ll serve as a wake up call to all of us who have, perhaps, started to believe this division is there for the taking; instead we should accept that there are teams, even in the lower reaches that can pull of a shock or two.
With Gabriel Zakuani injured Shane Blackett line dup alongside loan signing James Chester at the heart of the defence with Charlie Lee slipping into midfield.
With a crowd in excess of 7000 packed into London Road Posh got off to the kind of start they`d have dreamed of going ahead as early as the fifth minute. The goal came courtesy of the penalty spot after George Boyd had been fouled and Dean Keates scored his third of the season by calmly beating Mildenhall from twelve yards.
It should have been the prelude for an attacking display that would have hopefully brought a hatful of goals but it never turned out like that, instead with twenty-six minutes on the clock the visitors equalised with a spectacular goal that even had me applauding when Jean Francois Christophe best Joe Lewis all ends up with a superb overhead bicycle kick.
However, there was still an hour to go, plenty of time for Posh to snatch a winner or even go on to put Southend to the sword, wishing thing, merely wishful thinking. Instead, in a game whereby we dominated possession, it was Posh that were to end up floundering as the team from the coast cast their nets for an unlikely winner.
The fact that it came from the boot of the returning Shane Blackett made it even more unfortunate for Posh. Mousaa delivered a cross and when Shane swung that left foot of his it skewed off and past Lewis.
Darren tried to rescue maters but some may say the introduction of the non-league scoring sensation, Ben Wright, with a mere four minutes (plus stoppage time) was a case of too little too late.
Perhaps it`s simply better to put this one in the 'undeserved` file and move on, twelve games to go and our destiny is still in our own hands.
