Swindon 2 Posh 2

Swindon 2 Posh 2

Posh travelled to Swindon this evening to try and secure three more points that would bolster their promotion campaign.

For the fixture Darren Ferguson gave Andrew Crofts, our recent signing from Gillingham, his full debut with Charlie Lee dropping to the subs bench.

Unfortunately, it didn`t take long for Posh to fall behind. With less than ten minutes on the clock Jack Smith scored form close range with the assist being attributed to Jon-Paul McGovern.

Matters went from bad to worse seconds later when our new signing Gabriel Zakuani had to be replaced by Chris Westwood. Possession wise, in the first quarter of an hour, Swindon were well on top.

Thankfully, Posh were to get back on level terms in the twentieth minute when the Swindon player, Jon-Paul McGovern, who had provided the assist in his teams opening goal, put through his own net.

The goal saw Posh enjoy a spell of pressure forcing a couple of corners. As the half hour mark approached Joe Lewis was forced to make a save from an Anthony McNamee corner.

Down at the other end, McLean saw a header go just over. As half time approached Lewis was forced to save an effort from Jack Smith as Swindon looked to regain the initiative. It was to be the last action of the first half.

The second half saw neither side make any changes. The first effort from Posh saw Craig Mackail-Smith fire harmlessly over. As Both sides failed to create clear cut chances both managers made changes around the hour mark.

For Swindon the ex-Leicester Premiership player, Lilian Nalis, came on for Billy Paynter whilst Ferguson chose to replace Sergio Torres with Shaun Batt. Swindon were still edging the game possession wise and Lewis had to make a smart save from a shot by Jon-Paul McGovern.

As the game moved into its final quarter, Posh forced two corners neither of which produced a decent scoring chance. Posh continued to force the issue and a Russell Martin corner had to be hastily cleared. Mackail-Smith the fired over and you began to think a draw was the inevitable result.

Swindon`s leading scorer, Simon Cox, then headed a chance over. Sadly, with ten minutes to go, the same player didn`t waste a second opportunity when he scored from close range. Posh now had it all to do.

With time running out George Boyd cleared the bar with a long range effort. Just as you thought it was all in vain, in the last minute Shaun Batt lashed home a beauty from just outside the area after a pass from Westwood.

Sadly, wins for Leicester and MK Dons saw us drop a little off the pace for an automatic promotion place but with minutes to go I`d have settled for that!
